Ashford Contra Dance

Going contra dancing makes a great social evening because you don’t have to learn any footwork (just walk smoothly to the beat) and because by the end of the evening you are likely to have danced with everyone else in the room. Even if you think you can’t dance, you will find that you can do contra dancing – it’s easy!





Young Americans are giving new life to the old English country dances. Inspired by the young dancers in Asheville, North Carolina, Karen and John Sweeney are starting Contrafusion, a new contra dance club in Ashford in Kent. The weekly dances will have an emphasis on teaching (including the American styling of adding extra spins, twirls and variations) as well as dancing. If you have never done this type of dancing before we will help you to get started so that you can join in and have fun on your first night. We are also booking the best contra bands and callers in the country for monthly Saturday night dances starting in April or May.
